Sustainability and reshoring drives developments

Several opportunities have arisen from the Covid-19 pandemic but the main focus in the textile industry has been addressing systemic issues that were already present.

The biggest change we’re seeing is the rise of re-shoring. As an industry, we’ve been talking about micro-factories and smart manufacturing for years, but 2020 will be remembered as the time when close proximity production returned.

Shift towards sustainable production

In addition, to succeed today, modern textile manufacturers must adopt responsible and ethical manufacturing processes. There’s a perception that the fashion industry’s standard business models and manufacturing processes are behind the curve and unsustainable. But with the shift in consumer behaviour spotlighting fast fashion and its detrimental impact on the environment, the supply chain is adapting and there has been a significant shift towards more environmentally secure production.

Digital technologies enable this metamorphosis, because on-demand production reduces waste and cuts carbon emissions, among many other benefits. It’s a momentous swing, but super-brands and smaller companies alike have committed to various carbon reduction initiatives, some regulatory and others by various NGOs, which are driving positive changes.

Huge impact of digital technologies

At Fespa, we’re witnessing the impact that innovative technologies, automated processes and the increase in eco-friendly materials are having on textile production. We believe that digital technologies can make a huge impact, leading us into the next decade with enhanced processes, intelligent manufacturing, green production and smart retailing.

At Fespa Global Print Expo 2022, a number of suppliers will be highlighting the latest developments for textile production, showcasing new technologies, media and consumables and demonstrating that there are exciting opportunities for textile printers to embrace.
