Biological printing material shimmers in brilliant colours

Products made from sustainable materials are in vogue. The German nonwovens manufacturer Norafin recognised the signs of the times more than 20 years ago and, with its many years of experience in waterjet technology, was the first company in the world to produce nonwovens based purely on natural fibres.

The result is tear-resistant, environmentally friendly textile materials based on flax, hemp, lyocell or viscose fibres, which are processed into stable and ecological nonwovens using hydroentanglement and marketed under the Extra Organic brand. The compostable nonwovens are used, for example, in interiors, where they are successfully used as wall panelling. Their major advantage over conventional wall panelling is obvious: the water-jet bonded materials do not require a backing material and can be applied directly to the wall. This means that the humidity in the room can be better regulated and a pleasant room climate can be created.

Printing on natural materials

Norafin's natural flax, lyocell and viscose nonwovens can be printed with aqueous pigment inks and UV LED inks on all common printers and impress with their brilliant colour quality. The Extra Organic printing material is profiled for HP Latex printers and UV gel certified for Canon Colorado devices. Another proven printing process for printing on natural materials is pigment transfer printing (Trapis) from Mimaki. This waterless textile printing process produces brilliant colours and ensures a particularly hard-wearing surface.

Wall panelling with a feeling of being surrounded by hay

In addition to processing the organic nonwovens with wallpaper paste, Norafin presented another innovation at Heimtextil 2025. The flax and lyocell materials are now also available with a strong self-adhesive backing, which makes them easier to apply to walls or objects. The natural fibre nonwovens are produced in a width of 220 cm and are available in various ready-made widths. The standard widths include 53cm/110cm and 160cm. As the stable, natural nonwoven wall panelling supports a good and healthy indoor climate with its positive properties, it is also suitable for other living room and office concepts. For example, it can form the base material for acoustic panels, room dividers, blinds or ceiling panels. Printed to a high standard, the materials are an eye-catcher in rooms and buildings. In addition to the natural look, which remains recognisable depending on the choice of motif and printing process, the room is filled with a light, pleasant feeling of being surrounded by hay. All materials can be provided with a high-quality, flame-retardant finish and can therefore be used in the contract sector without any problems.

Nonwovens made from recycled polyester

In addition to pure natural fibre nonwovens, Norafin also offers its customers nonwovens made from recycled polyester, which can be printed in high quality and brilliant colours using the sublimation printing process. Just like the materials made from natural fibres, the nonwoven made from recycled polyester does not require a carrier material and can be applied directly to the intended surfaces using paste or self-adhesive backing.
